Single Mothers - Lifestyle Explained
A woman described as a Single Mom, is one who raises her children single-handedly and has no partner residing with her. This situation could exist because of the Mom's choice or a variety of reasons such as mutual agreement, desertion or death of the child's father. A Single Mom's legal status varies between the states, from country to country and may depend on the circumstances surrounding an individuals situation.
The developed countries of USA, England and Australia report that thirty percent of new babies are born by Single women with more than half of these living in a de facto relationship. With the addition of divorce and separation statistics, the number of children being raised by Single Moms accounts for about a quarter of the childhood population.
These days, a woman's choice of becoming a Single Mom is readily accepted by the public and carries no shame, rather, a Single Mom can take pride in the fact that she has produced a child and is undertaking the role of a single parent. A woman's need to bear a child is a very powerful instinct and rather than go through life childless, because a suitable partner with whom to enter into a joint family raising situation is not available, then she elects to become a Single Mom.
There have been a number of well known personalities who, over the past few years, have chosen to become Single Moms. These people have been successful artists that have been able to continue with their careers as well as dutifully raise their children. The publicity surrounding these people has positively influenced public opinion and helped to make the status of being a Single Mom at least acceptable, if not fashionable.
With the change in attitude to Single Mums, Employers have also become tolerant and supportive of women employees who wish to become Moms. Maternity leave has been introduced to allow a woman to bear their child and nurture it for an initial period and on the Mom's return to work a child day care service is either provided or at least subsidised by the employer.
Certain sections of the community are still critical of a woman who chooses to become a Single Mom, even going so far as to conduct studies that indicate that the children of single parents are severely disadvantaged. However, a woman's maternal instincts will always overcome such criticism, reassured by the knowledge that her child will be raised in a happy environment.
