Home Improvement – Calculating The Project Cost

Posted by Oze Parrot on 9th November 2006

Before embarking on a Home Improvement Project it is always wise to calculate what the total cost is likely to be, within reason. This will ensure that you have enough money to see the job through to completion, as well as to allow a few extra dollars for any unexpected costs that may arise, along the way.

Home PlanningOnce you have decided on what materials are needed, determined the costs and established a budget, it is time to look for bargain sales, discounts and auction sales where your budget expenses can be cut, thus allowing you a bit extra for added embellishments. These extras could even be that of engaging a tradesman who might add a few finishing touches to your work.

Keep on the lookout for sales in the handy man’s section of the local hardware stores. Generally, materials that are sold in this section of the store are designed for the do-it-yourself home owner, are easy to work with and only basic tools are needed to use them.

Should your Home Improvement Project be of a specialised nature, such as a ducted heating or cooling system, then obviously, the services of a tradesman will be required. Choosing the correct contractor for the job will also require a deal of ground work on your part.

Get in touch with contractors in your area and apply for quotes for the work to be done. Also talk to your family, friends and neighbours asking them if they have, or know people who have, had similar work carried out in the past. Any recommendations that you may get from people who are known to you, are definitely worth following up.

As soon as you have engaged a contractor, notify your volunteer labour force of family, friends and neighbours, so as to organise their efforts around those of the tradesmen. This way, there will be no conflict or interference with your contractor’s work schedule.

By carefully Calculating the Cost of a Home Improvement Project, organising volunteers and carefully selecting skilled tradesmen, the successful and timely completion of your Home Improvement Project is assured.

Home Improvement, Plan Your Project

Posted by Oze Parrot on 6th January 2006

When starting a new Home Improvement Project, this is a time to get the whole family involved so that you can enjoy each other’s company as well as work together as a group.

If it is just a new coat of paint or a major renovation then this is a marvelous time for friends and relatives to get together and have a good time. Yes you can have a good time redecorating. Home Improvements can be carried out by anyone, male or female, young or old and is an opportunity for your children to learn new skills.

You will get excuses from some people when you ask them for help, and no doubt you will get to hear some ridiculous excuses, but with a bit of cajoling and maybe the offer of a few drinks they are sure to come around to lend a hand. A Home Improvement Project is a big task and you will need lots of help.

Turn the task into a working bee, provide a barbecue and a few drinks and the work will get done in a party atmosphere and everyone will have a lot of fun. Your friends and, especially your family, should be right in there helping you to improve your lifestyle.

A Home Improvement Project can be anything, from a simple slap of paint or a full blown heating system exchange. All home improvements are important tasks, no matter how small, and should be carried out with care and consideration for everyone living in the home.

The Project should be discussed with all members of the household and planned so that the job can be carried out with the least amount of inconvenience to everybody concerned. The larger the Project then the more time you will need to spend on planning the work and discussing available finances.

When choosing help for your Home Improvement projects, negative thinkers are not needed, nor are people who do not agree with what you are doing to the house, all they are likely to do is slow down the work and interfere with the success of the Project.

A Project should only be carried out when you have a free few days or however long it is going to take, there is no point embarking on a Home Improvement Project if you are not able to finish the job.

Also, contractors should not be brought in unless you can afford to pay them. A Home Improvement Project shouldn’t be something that bogs you down, it should be something that lifts your spirits and creates unity and contentment among your family members.

Home Improvement, You Must be Licensed

Posted by Oze Parrot on 4th January 2006

All Home improvement contractors must have a license before they can legally carry out any trade work what so ever. These licenses basically state that they are able bodied to do such jobs and have passed all the necessary requirements and tests that they needed to get the status of a licensed contractor. There are different governing bodies concerning licenses, in each state in America there is at least one license body. In the UK there is usually one in each provincial town or major city.

If you employ contractors to carry out work for you then they have to be licensed for the work to be legal, for example in the UK, only a Corgi registered plumber can install a new boiler and heating system, this means that if they are not registered then their work is illegal and if anything goes wrong with the work no warranty or insurance claim will be met and any costs that are incurred will have to be paid by you.

If you are thinking about opening up your own home improvement business then make sure that you research thoroughly all the rules and regulations that apply to this type of business, make sure that you talk to the local authorities, where you intend to offer your services, about what licenses and registrations you need to have.

Licenses are important when it comes to any Home Improvement business, if you get some work done that isn’t licensed there can be some serious repercussions when personal injury or property damage occurs. so it is up to you to make sure that your contractor has a full and valid license.

If you wish to apply for a license yourself then make sure that your application is submitted at least six months before you plan to carry out any work as it will take some time for the tests and evaluations to be carried out, and don’t forget that delays are a very common problem when it comes to dealing with government departments.

Posted by Oze Parrot on 3rd January 2006

People are always striving for better and there is no reason why their home should be left behind. Many people want the best car, the best children, the best job so it follows that they want to live in the best house.

Home Improvement can be expensive at the best of times so finding a home improvement service that allows discounts is a bonus. If you are budgeting to finance the alterations to your home, then you really need to search for the best deals.

Your local hardware and home decorating stores often have promotions and discounts available, for example buy one get one free, or three for the price of two; these types of offers are very common in most stores. Discounts are also available through competitions, you have to win of course but you don’t always have to come first, usually second and third place holders win a prize too.

When improving your home you have to keep in mind a fixed amount that you are prepared to pay to get what you want done, there is no point spending a fortune when discounted services are available.
You need to set out exactly what Home Improvements you want to carry out and keep the costs within the structure of your budget.

When preparing your budget, take into consideration the problems that could arise, money wise. You must allow for the extra costs of hidden extras, inflation, transport and so on. So allow a little extra in your budget for these unforeseen costs but also be alert for the various promotions and discounts available in many stores from time to time that will definitely save you some money.

You will not need to spend thousands of dollars to Improve Your Home if you are prepared to take your time and exploit the various promotions and discounts that are available.

Home Improvement discounts are also available on the internet so go online and check the search engines for Home Improvement Discount services. Online stores have very little overheads and sometimes they can supply goods a lot cheaper than regular stores.

This is particularly the case with a drop ship merchant who does not personally handle any stock. The drop ship merchant has no inventory or invoices to bother with, all he has to do is take the orders and pass them along to the shipping company.

Spend some time in front of your computer, it could be well worth your while.
